MEETING IN COLUM BUS Sixteen Foreign Countries to Send Delegations to May Meeting. Columbus, May 6. (AP) The machinery necessary to make so large a religious convocation as the Presbyterian general assembly func tion will be entrusted to five men when the assembly meets here May 25 to 29.

They are Dr. Lewis key mour Mudge, Philadelphia, the stated clerk, and four assisting clerks. The highest honor in the bestowal of the Presbyterian denomination is that of moderator, the presiding of ficer, as it is in each of the synods and Presbyteries which go to make up the Presbyterian church. But the executive officer in the assembly, as In the smaller units, is the stated clerk. He it is who administers the affairs of the office of the general assembly throughout the year.

He it is who shapes the pro grams and the routine and who pre pares for the orderly procedure necessary for the success of the sessions which bring church clerical and lay delegates from all parts of the United States and 16 foreign countries. He Is compared, by his church, to a pilot guiding the craft through ecr clesiastical waters, a craft which bears the moderator and other officers as well as the vast body of bis denominations. Dr. Mudge was elected stated clerk of the general assembly in 1921 for a five-year term, was re-elected In 1926 and again in 1931. The 1931 sembly also elected him moderator.

He has been a trustee of the Fresby-terian general assembly since 1921, secretary of the general council of the assembly, secretary of the 1925 special commission for "purity, peace, unity and progress," and in 1932 was elected vice president of the federal council of Churches of Christ in America. In addition, Dr. Mudge is a director of Princeton theological seminary and a trustee of Wilson college. He was graduated from Princeton university in 18S9 and from the seminary in 1895, entering the ministry as a scion of a family of clergy, and held pastorates at Beverly, N. Trenton, Lancaster and Harrisburg, Pa.

As stated clerk, Dr. Mudge is executive head of the office of the general assembly and Its five departments, administration, publicity, vacancy and supply, church cooperation and union, and history. Other Important duties include the editing -ofthe official church law books, the giving of legal opinions In ecclesiastical matters, and acting as representative of the church on special occasions. Upon his four assistants at general assemblies devolve many of the details for a successful routine. The Rev.

William B. Pugh of Chester, Is document clerk and conducts the balloting for moderator and standing committees. He is the custodian of all official papers in their transmission to and from standing committees. Mr. Pugh is a pastor, a member of the Chester Presbytery and a leading exponent of ecclesiastical law in Pennsylvania synod.

He is secretary of the board of trustees i- of Princeton theological seminary and served as a chaplain overseas during the World war. Classified Ads. CLASSIFIED REPLIES.
