Dr. McClure was born July 30, 1921, in Newark, daughter of Ursel K. and Jeanette Ayers Swain. She graduated from Newark High School in 1939, having completed the college preparatory program with straight A's. Prior to entering college, Dr.

McClure worked as a staff reporter for the Newark Advocate newspaper. She earned a full scholarship to Denison University in Granville, where she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa scholastic honorary in her junior year. While at Denison, Dr. McClure was the editor of the school newspaper, The Denisonian, and was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Scenes from Yesteryear This drawing of Newark High is from 1900.

20, 1999, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was born April 8, 1915, in Appalachia, to the late General R. and Susan (Arington) Gilbert. He is survived by one daughter, Sherrie Gilbert of Newark; one son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Karen Gilbert of Warren, stepchildren, Sherman and Charlotte Boothe of Columbus, Sylvia Bryan of Jacksonville, Sheila Hash of Michigan, Sheridan Boothe of Greensprings, W.Va., Sherwood and Judy Boothe of Knoxville, and Sherrill and Alice Boothe of Rutledge, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Polly Gilbern, N.C; two sisters and brother-in-law, June Sameraro of Cleveland, and Fay and Al Matthews of Seattle, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie (York) Gilbert, who died in 1981; two stepdaughters, Shirley Russell and Shelby Hamilton; one granddaughter, Amber Gilbert; and one sister, Opal Ledford.

15, 1998, at Wesley Glen Health Center in Columbus. She was born April 18, 1903, in Kindred, N.D., to Judson Wright Blackmon and Etta Myers Blackmon. She graduated from Vassar College in 1925 and obtained a master's degree in religious education from Boston University School of Theology in 1927. She married W. Arthur Milne, a Methodist minister, in 1927.

Throughout her life, she was very active in the United Methodist church. With her family, she lived in Ann Arbor, as a child; then in Poughkeepsie and White Plains, N.Y.; and in the Ohio communities of Cincinnati, Columbus, Granville, Miamisburg and Toledo. She lived in the Wesley Glen Retirement Center from 1977 until January 1996, when she went into the Wesley Glen Health Center. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Gallagher of Lexington, granddaughters, Mary LaRue of Philadelphia and Martha Stallmann of Raleigh, N.C.; grandson, Arthur LaRue of Minneapolis; and great-grandchildren, Timothy Stallmann and Anna Stallmann of Raleigh, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1976; son, Arthur Bill, in 1993; and sister, Lucy Fraleigh, in October 1998.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at Wesley Glen Retirement Center, 5155 N. High Columbus. Memorial contributions may be sent to Boston University School of Theology, 745 Commonwealth Room 109, Boston, Mass.

Bellows was a resident of Shreveport, since 1945. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was retired and was a lifetime member of PTA, past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship and a member of Central Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, George F.

Bellows; two sons, Tom and Sandy Bellows; a daughter, Sherry B. St. Claire of Shreveport, and a brother, Donald R. Carnicom of Manitowoc, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert R.

Following her graduation from Denison in May 1944, she became a staff writer for the International News Service in Columbus.

She married John Crile McClure, also a native of Newark, on Aug. 1, 1945. Following her travels with her husband across the country and abroad during his military service in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. McClure earned her M.A.

and Ph.D. degrees from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, completing her post-graduate education in 1969. While living in Albuquerque, Dr. McClure taught English at Sandia High School and the Sandia Preparatory School for Girls. Dr.

McClure moved with her family to Atlanta in 1968, where, for 23 years, she was a professor of English at the Georgia State University in Atlanta. She also assisted in the formation, organization and management, and eventually served as the director, of the Honors Program at Georgia State University for 15 years. She authored and co-authored many books and articles, and was recognized nationally as an expert on Gertrude MYverton and other notable female writers. Upon her retirement from Georgia State University in 1992, Dr. McClure continued to pursue her professional interests.

She taught literature courses and served on the Board of Directors at the Senior University of Greater Atlanta; authored numerous academic and educational articles; and co-authored, with her husband, biographies and autobiographies of several noted World War II aviators. She was an active member of the Graydon Sunday School class at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, Ga. Dr. McClure remained active and involved with her academic and personal pursuits, including her involvement in the Western Literature Association, the League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women, until her recent illness. Dr.

McClure is survived by her husband, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John C. McClure, also of Atlanta; sons, John T.

McClure of Snellville, and James A. McClure of Atlanta; daughter, Barbara McClure Schroeder of Denver, daughter-in-law, Barbara L. McClure of Snellville; son-in-law, Mark C. Schroeder of Denver; grandson, Kenneth John McClure Schroeder of Denver; sisters, Evelyn Swain McVick-er of New Concord and Clara Louella Swain Armstrong of Rockville, sister-in-law, Esta Hammond Swain of Newark; brother-in-law, Arthur E. Armstrong of Rockville, all formerly of Newark; five nephews; three nieces; four stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Waters, a carpenter for more than 30 years, died Jan. 21, 1999, at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born June 12, 1923, in West Carlisle to the late Emmett G. and Hallie (Hughes) Waters.

Mr. Waters was employed by Meyer for the past 18 years. He enjoyed his family and loved telling people about every one of them. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Naomi J. (Flowers) Waters, whom he married April 16, 1948; onedaughter and son-in-law, Anita and Roger Linger of Hebron; two sons and daughter-in-law, Mike Waters, and Jeff and Brenda Waters, all of Newark; eight grandchildren, Jason, Jaime, Joshua, Emily, Sarah, Jeremy, Heath and Tara; two great-granddaughters, Katlyn and Krista; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Kennon and Dorothy Waters of Heath, Willard Waters of Florida, Don and Pauline Waters of Newark, and Gene "Buzz" and Pauline Waters of Chatham; and one sister, Ruie Kathleen Hall of Heath.
