Area briefs Scholarships awarded to Newark Catholic seniors Academic scholarships totaling $1,074,456 were awarded to 24 members of the Newark Catholic High School Class of 1999. This amount represents the total dollar amount students received from all colleges to which they applied. Most of these academic awards were renewable for four years, provided that the student maintains a required academic record. Students also received grants, loans, and work-study employment based on financial need. According to Newark Catholic guidance counselor, Tom Lusk, 90 percent of Newark Catholic High School graduates continue their education at four-year colleges, with five percent going on to two-year technical schools.

Par Ex Learning Center obtains grant money Par Excellence Learning Center, a private, non-profit elementary school targeting lower-income and at-risk children, reports that the Metropolitan Life Foundation has awarded the school a grant of $1,000 in support of a project proposed by George Shirley. Shirley is a Metropolitan Life employee who volunteers with the organization as an active board member. Metropolitan Life awarded the grant through its "Volunteer Ventures" program, which encourages and supports employee involvement at the local level in non-profit organizations that work to improve quality of life. Grants are made for special projects in which Met Life employees have continuing involvement as a volunteer. Par Excellence School was founded 10 years ago in the belief that low income should not be a barrier to educational achievement.

Small class sizes and one-on-one attention are keys to success for the students. Tuition is provided by the generosity of individual and corporate benefactors, as well as families, who can help reduce school fees by volunteering at the school. Partial and full scholarships are available, and an annual fund-raising drive is underway. Currently, about 85 students attend the school, located at 383 Washington Street. Persons interested in contributing to the Par Excellence annual fund-raising drive are invited to contact the school at 345- DIRECTORS.
