Commodities Coffee futures prices plunged Wednesday in panicked selling sparked by increased production, particularly In Brazil, while world consumption declines. Prices fell to contract lows and threatened to sink below $1 a pound for the first time In two years as roasters, eying falling demand, figured they could wait for a better price before buying, said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "Roasters have no Incentive to buy anything more than on a hand-to-mouth basis because of the falling prices," Ganes said.

The Agriculturo Department next woek Is expected to release Its revised 1995-96 world production figures, and the agency also might Include a first forecast on Brazil's 1996-97 crop, a USDA official said Wednesday. On other commodity markets, soybeans futures priceB surged to new contract highs and lumber futures prices advanced the daily trading limit. In New York. Investors expect Brazil's 1 996-97 coffee crop will show a healthy recovery following two frosts and a drought that depleted this year's crop, Ganes said. Cottee prices climbed to eight-year h'ghs In July 1994 alter the damaging frosts in Brazil, the world's leading producer. Prices In the past three months have fallen about 30 percent, however, even though the winter months in Europe and Nonh America often see peak consumption. Dollar NEW YORK (AP) The dollar rose against the major currencies Wednesday as renewod expectations of lower Gorman Interest rates cost the mark Its appeal as a aafe haven during the turmoil In France. During Asian and European trading, the dollar refused to continue the previous day fall. Many traders believe Germany's central bank will lower Interest rates by January and were drawn to the dollar. The greenback rose slightly against the Japanese yen partly on expectations that trade figures to be released Thursday would show another drop In Japan's trade surplus with the United Slates.

"The dollar can't just go nowhere. It has to go somewhere. It coukln't go down. The dollar had to go higher," said Bob Near, a currency vice president at the Bank ol New York. In late New York trading Wednesday, the dollar was quoted at 101.37 Japanese yen, up from 101.26 late Tuesday.

The dollar also was changing hands In Now York at 1.4435 German marks, un from 1.4338. The Bundesbank kept Its two-week securities repurchase rate at the same level It was a week ago, but weak economic data and remarks by Bundesbank officials were keeping the markets guessing. Traders have been convinced that the central bank will have to cut rates If not at its policy-setting committee meeting next week, then In Jen-uary. The Bundesbank has shown In the past that prefers to surprise the markets when II cuts. "If the Bundesbank continues to tantalize the markets Into boliovlng it's going to Cut, that allows the dollar to trade higher In the Interim," Noar said.

The rate cut expectations hurt the merk against other European currencies. Even the French franc, which had been suffering bocuuse of the 13-day general strike disrupting France, reversed course and rose egainst the mark. The market liked the news that President Clinton was prepared to accept the Republican bid to cut the budgot deficit within seven years, instead of the 10 years ho had sought.
