will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville. JEANNE Mrs. Jeanne, a well-known musician and private music teacher, died April 6, 2004, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center in Newark. She was born May 13, 1910, in Chicago, the first of two children of the late Inez (Karn) and Benjamin Stuber. Ruth's father taught strings in public schools and the family moved frequently.

In Newark, when Ruth was 2, her father discovered that she had perfect pitch and started her on a childsized violin and other instruments. Ruth continued to pursue music throughout her school years. During her sophomore year at Evanston (Ill.) Township High School, she began playing violin in the Evanston Symphony Orchestra. She continued with the orchestra throughout her college years. In 1932, she graduated with honors from Northwestern University, where she earned a bachelor of music degree with a major in violin.

In 1933, she began playing the marimba and was selected as one of 100 marimba players organized by Clair Musser to perform a concert at the Chicago World's Fair. Eventually, Ruth moved to New York, where, with the Orchestrette Classique, a women's chamber orchestra, she was featured as a marimba soloist in a 1940 premier performance of the Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra, written specifically for her by Paul Creston. Through performances such as these, she was instrumental in furthering the use of the marimba as a concert instrument on a national level. In 1941, Ruth married Armand Jeanne and they settled in Garden City, N.Y. Ruth continued pursuing her musical interests on a part-time basis with the Long Island Choral Society, the Cherry Valley Chorus and the Great Neck Symphony Orchestra.

She also marimba in her home and led numerous informal musical groups playing recorder, violin, and other instruments. She and the family spent summers in New Hampshire, where she found time to play with the Marlboro (Vermont) Festival Orchestra. In the late 1950s, the family moved to Granville, where she became a violinist with the Denison String Orchestra and principal violinist and later timpanist with the Licking County Symphony Orchestra. She continued teaching the marimba, recorder and strings in her home. Ruth directed the Granville Methodist Hand Bell Choir, was co-director of the Licking County Youth Orchestra; organized and led the Granville Fellowship Music Group, made up of recorder players from the Granville area; and directed her Marimba Ensemble of high school students and another marimba group of adult players.

She arranged and published numerous ensembles for the marimba, many of which are widely used by high school and college music departments. She was an inspiration to a multitude of students, many of whom have gone on to professional careers in music. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, Granville Music Club, Music Educators National Conference, American String Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Louise Jeanne of Madison, and their sons, Thomas and James; and son and daughter-inlaw, Richard and La Verne Jeanne of Reno, and their son, Jean-Paul, and daughter, Juliette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in her husband, Armand L.
