VITAL STATISTICS Saturday, Oct. 31, 1992 The Advocate8A For the record Bush claims nothing new in Weinberger indictment of a Jan. 7, 1986, meeting in which President Reagan, then-Vice President Bush, Cabinet members and presidential aides discussed a straight swap of arms for hostages with Iran. The indictment, obtained by the independent counsel investigating the Iran-Contra scandal, maintained that Bush knew from that meeting that Weinberger and former Secretary of State George Shultz opposed the Iranian arms sales. Bush has said he knew the White House was sending arms to Iran and that some hostages were being freed from Lebanon.

he knew of the Iran-Contra affair. "This is the smoking gun," said Clinton's running mate, Sen. Al Gore. But Bush said, "If there is a smoking gun out there, I'd have been hauled up by one of those Senate committees" or the Iran-Contra prosecutors long before. Prosecutors, however, discovered the notes only last year, long after the congressional inquiries ended.

"I have told the truth," Bush insisted on CNN's "Larry King Live." The indictment was based on Weinberger's handwritten notes 4:18 p.m. To 155 E. Main St. Ted Ellis, injury. Transported.

Weinberger on Friday contradicted President Bush's claim he never knew that arms were being traded for hostages in the Iran-Contra affair or that two Cabinet members were opposed to the deal. Bush claimed there was nothing new in the indictment, the timing of which he called "peculiar." Aides noted that it was revealed four days before the presidential election.
