Space raises big bucks Representative accumulates almost $213,000 By MALIA RULON Gannett News Service WASHINGTON Rep. Zack Space raised almost $213,000 in the first three months of 2007, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

After paying expenses, handing out $23,000 in "win bonus" checks to several campaign staff members, and paying $5,555 for a swearing-in reception catered by McCormick Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, Space has about $180,000 in the bank. "Congressman Space is very pleased with the enormous support he received just months after his election," Space spokesman Stuart Chapman said Monday. "Clearly, his message of bringing change to Washington is resonating loud and clear." But the Dover Democrat will need that amount and more if he's to ward off a challenge in the 2008 election. Typically, freshmen lawmakers are more vulnerable, and Space has been targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee. The NRCC has spent $82,900 in independent expenditures against Space during the past three months, with much of that going to pay for an NRCCsponsored Web site that paints Space as a "liberal" who is "out of touch" with Ohio.

"We are keeping a close eye on him," NRCC spokesman Ken Spain said Monday. "We certainly view him as a target, and he is accumulating a record that is increasingly making him an easy Space was elected in November to replace six-term former A memorial service for Alice Gretchen Salt, 81, formerly of Bexley and Westerville, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bexley United Methodist Church, 2657 E. Private interment will be in Green Lawn Cemetery. Alice died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Kendal at Granville. She was born May 14, 1925, in Columbus, to Paul and Alice (Stoehr) Schacht, who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Western College, Oxford, class of 1947, where she was a member of the Alumnae Association and Trustee Emerita. Throughout life, Alice generously gave her time to many organizations, including Bexley United Methodist Church, where she served as church librarian, secretary of the administrative board and the food pantry coordinator for 20 years; the Bexley Historical Society; and the Hanby House in Westerville.

Alice was a longtime visitor to Mohonk Mountain House in the Shawangunk Mountains in New Paltz, N.Y., and was a generous benefactor to its neighbor, the Mohonk Preserve, a large nature sanctuary. Alice is survived by her husband, Charles F. Salt; her children, Betsy Salt and Jeffrey (Brenda) Salt; her grandchildren, Megan Salt, Colin Salt and Jeanne Metzger; her sister, Emily LeBaron; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests contributions be made to Bexley United Methodist Church or the Salt Family Endowment at the Mohonk Preserve, P.O. Box 715, New Paltz, NY 12561.

Space spent almost $1.6 million on contested primary and general election races in 2006, leaving him with just $27,500 in the bank by the end of 2006. According to his latest campaign finance report, which covers Jan. 1 through March 31, Space took in money primarily from political action committees and Democratic lawmakers, such as Ohio Reps. Marcy Kaptur, of Toledo, and Tim Ryan, of Niles. Individual receipts accounted for 31 percent of his total, while PAC contributions made up 69 percent.

In 2006, the opposite was the case: Space raised 67.5 percent of his campaign funds from individuals and 31.5 percent from PACs. He also loaned the campaign $1,500, an amount he still hasn't repaid, according to his latest report. None of his donations came from a registered lobbyist, Space's office said. Space's campaign account also lists a debt, which includes money he owes for his Web site, rent and an additional $28,000 in yet-to-be-paid win bonuses to three staffers and Fletcher Rowley Chao and Riddie, a political strategy firm.
