Advocate LOCAL Tuesday, August 13, 2002: Deaths and funerals Calendar Robert L. Murdock April 20, 1912-Aug. 11, 2002 A funeral service for Robert L. Murdock, 90, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Millikan Throckmorton Funeral Home, with the Rev.

Richard Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Granville First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Murdock, a retired butcher with Acme Market i in Waynesburg, died Aug. 11, 2002, at the LPN Healthcare Center. He was born April 20, 1912, in Waynesburg, to the late Zachariah "Ted" and Clara (Davis) Murdock. Mr.

Murdock served in the Army during World War II and had a special interest in charity shows with the Lions Club. He was past president of the Waynesburg Lions Club and a member of the Elks, American Legion and Masonic Lodge of Waynesburg. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sue Murdock of Heath; law, Louise Murdock of Rhode Island; grandchildren, Steven Kelly Murdock and Kimberly Throckmorton, both of Waynesburg, and Kristy Kramer of Middletown, five greatgrandchildren; and sisters, Sue (William) Throckmorton of Waynesburg, and Iona Fisher of California. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mae Phillips Murdock, in October of 2001; son, R. Terry Murdock; and brother, John Murdock.

9, 1904-Aug. 11, 2002 A graveside service for Golda D. Mobley, 97, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Newark Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Robert L.

Knox officiating. Mrs. Mobley, a homemaker and member of Neal Avenue United Methodist Church, died Aug. 11, 2002, at the Newark Healthcare Centre. She was born Dec.

9, 1904, in Alledonia, to the late Robert and Hulda Ann (Perkins) Goodman. She is survived by two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Sandra J. and Robert Bolton of Newark, and Pam and Jerry Loudermilk of Heath; grandson, William Mobley of Lancaster; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Walter Mobley, in 1990; son, Paul L. Mobley; granddaughter, Carol Sue Schaben; and two brothers, George and John Goodman.

2, 2002 A funeral service for Grace Rice Skeens, 73, of Louisa, was held on Aug. 5 at the Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa, Ky. Burial followed in Rose Hill Burial Park, Ashland, Ky. Mrs. Skeens, a homemaker, died Aug.

2, 2002. She was born July 28, 1929, in Ashland, to the late Dave and Mary (Riffe) Rice. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Linda) Gregg and Mrs. William (Sandra) Saad, both of Newark; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Madge Skeens of Newark; and two brothers, Bert Rice of Fort Peirce, and Glen Rice of Ashland, Ky.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Skeens who died in 2000. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Hospice of Louisa. The workshop will discuss discipline, child rearing and the difference a an involved father makes in a child's life. The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Church sponsors back to school sale The annual Back to School Clothing and School Supply Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 88 N. Fifth Newark. This event seeks to supply necessary items and clothing to children in need as they return to school. The supplies will be prepackaged according to the Newark School requirements for each grade and each bag of supplies will cost $1.

Clothes' prices will be marked individually. Also there will be free haircuts on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, call 349-7020. Utica orientation, schedule pick up set for Aug. 20 Utica Junior High School will have orientation and schedule pick up for all seventh graders and their parents on Aug.

20 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Eighth graders may pick up their schedules at 6 p.m. Pre-Kid Class scheduled at LMH Women who are planning to become pregnant and those who are in early pregnancy are invited to a Pre-Kid Class at Licking Memorial Hospital. Learn what to expect during pregnancy, including body changes, nutritional needs and prenatal testing.

A Pre-Kid Class is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 20 in the Ruth Ridout Room, located on the third floor of the hospital, 1320 W. Main Newark. Cost is free.

Thursday at the Vensil-Orr Funeral Home with Pastor Jeffery Pound and Pastor Jerry Boylan officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memory Gardens. Mrs. Boylan, a former employee of the Ohio Plastics Company of Frazeysburg, died Aug. 12, 2002, at the Elmwood Nursing Home, Green Springs, Ohio.

She born June 20, 1918, in Martinsburg, to the late Walter J. and Orpha C. (Strain) Frye. Mrs. Boylan retired in 1978 from the Larson Saw Company.

She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Tiffin, and a former member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Granville. She was also a former member of the Eager Beavers Senior Citizens of Hanover. She is survived by three sons, Earl "Bud" (Phyllis) Boylan of Newark, Donald (Kris) Boylan of Columbus, and Jerry L. (Debbie) Boylan of Tiffin; daughter, Susie (Pete) McClellan of Brookville, three sisters, Merle Chadwell, Ada Hughes of Newark, and Ruth (Ray) Gantt of Utica; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Boylan, whom she married on June 1, 1940, and who died on June 23, 1992; two brothers, Harley and Clyde Frye; and one sister, Mary Rodriguez.

Thursday at the Hartford Cemetery in Croton with Kenneth Larimore officiating. Mr. Snyder, who served in the U.S. Army and retired from Nestle's where he worked for 35 years, died Aug. 11, 2002, at his home after an extended period with cancer.

He was born May 21, 1933, to the late Harry and Lillie Snyder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Cheryl; great-granddaughter, Rylie Elizabeth Hammond; and brother, Frank. He is survived by his sons, John (Tim) of Croton, Gary of Spring Grove, and Eric (Darla) of Croton; daughter, Carol (Rick) Strahsburg of Croton; grandchildren, Stacie (Brock) Berkley, of Newark, Aimee Shaub of Johnstown, Zachery, Eric John (EJ) and Jordan Snyder of Croton; great-grandchildren, Hailee and Brice Shaub of Johnstown, and Kaela Berkley of Newark; sister, Gloria (Bill) Larimore; brother, Kenneth (Ruth) Snyder of Centerburg; and many nieces, nephews and friends. (AP) Nature photographers Galen and Barbara Rowell, whose works were published in National Geographic, Outside and many books, died Sunday when their charter plane crashed in the eastern Sierra Nevada. He was 61, and she was 54.

Galen Rowell was the author of 18 books of photography and his pictures appeared in such magazines as Audubon, Outdoor Photographer and Sports Illustrated. Barbara Rowell was a photographer, pilot and former director of public relations for The North Face the outdoor clothing company. She was also president of their gallery, The Mountain Light Photography. Nancy Chaffee LOS ANGELES (AP) Nancy Chaffee, a highly ranked tennis player in the 1950s, died Sunday of complications from cancer in Coronado, Calif. She was 73.

Longtime ABC and CBS sportscaster Jack Whitaker, married to Chaffee the past 11 years, said his wife was diagnosed with cancer six months ago. Chaffee rose as high as fourth in the world rankings. She was a three-time national indoor tennis champion and won the national junior championship twice. Peter Matz LOS ANGELES (AP) Peter Matz, an Emmy- and Grammywinning musical director, composer and arranger, died Friday of lung cancer. He was 73.

In a 50-year career of providing music for plays, movies and television, Matz worked on shows featuring such stars as Barbra Streisand, Burt Bacharach and Carol Burnett.
