Special thank you to the Newark Firemen and the men of the emergency squad. Arizona awaits Indians TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)--Most Cleveland Indians were reported today on their way to spring training here, and one early arrival admitted he had been extra relieved when players and owners reached agreement Sunday. "All I could think about during the relief pitcher Dick Colpaert noted, "was that I waited 10 years to get here, and when I finally do, I'm not allowed to play." The agreement Sunday cleared the way for spring training's official opening on Thursday. Colpaert, 29, was drafted from the Pittsburgh Pirates last year, where he'd become a fixture on Pirates' farm teams.

"My records were always good, but apparently not good enough," Colpaert said. Last season at Charleston in the International League, Colpaert won 14, lost seven and saved 21. That was good enough for the Indians to pick him up for the $25,000 drafting price. "When I heard the Indians drafted me, I tried not to be too excited about it, and I'm trying to keep my cool now," he said. "But the fact is, I am excited.

"After 10 years in the minors anybody would be." Colpaert said his best pitch is a "palm ball" that "when it's working right, it goes into the plate straight, then drops, sometimes as much as three feet. "The bottom falls out of it, and I can aim it at the batter's letters for it to sink to his knees," he said. Colpaert was among nine Indians who showed up in Tucson this weekend even though the Indians had decided to postpone the training until Thursday. Earlier, the Tribe had planned an unofficial four days of "early" spring training. Emergency Runs 1:55 p.m.
